The event, part of what has now become a series, included some previously-committed Perry supporters, like former Ambassador Peter Terpeluk.

But there were also some new faces there.

Jeff Miller, a former finance chairman of the California Republican Party and well-connected Sacramento lobbyist, flew in and helped recruit others to attend. Also present was Peter Holt, the owner of the San Antonio Spurs and the CEO of the top Caterpillar dealership.

?He is acting like somebody who is running,? said the attendee. ?He was careful with what he said last night, but he acted like he is ready for the fight.?

Perry?s wife, Anita, was also present at the dinner and the governor repeated what he has said in the past about her encouraging him to run.

The format followed previous donor dinners in Austin, with Perry?s political advisers offering a briefing to the Republicans before the meal with the potential candidate. Perry worked the room before the dinner and offered considerable face time to the crowd.

Henry Barbour, the Mississippi Republican committeeman and a Perry enthusiast, was there and said he was heartened after talking to some of the bundlers that the governor can build the warchest needed to run.

?I leave more convinced that he can raise the money under a compressed time schedule,? said Barbour.
