A new study reveals that distinct networks of genes in the honey bee brain contribute to specific behaviors, such as foraging or aggression, researchers report.
The study, in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is the first to show that common, naturally occurring behaviors are under the influence of discrete regulatory networks in the brain. It confirms, scientists say, what years of research into the brain and behavior seemed to indicate: There is a close relationship between changes in gene expression ? which genes are actively transcribed into other molecules to perform specific tasks in the cell ? and behavior.
"We found that there is a high degree of modularity in the regulation of genes and behavior, with distinct behavioral states represented by distinct gene network configurations," said University of Illinois entomology and neuroscience professor Gene Robinson, who led the study. Robinson is the director of the Institute for Genomic Biology at Illinois.
The study made use of data from the BeeSpace Project. Curated by Illinois medical information science professor Bruce Schatz, BeeSpace is a catalog of genes that turn on or off in the bee brain in response to social cues, environmental changes or as a result of hereditary factors. By analyzing gene expression and behavioral data from dozens of studies (which were performed under the auspices of the BeeSpace Project), the researchers were able to get a broad view of the molecular changes in the bee brain that contribute to behavior.
The team focused their analysis on lists of genes implicated in at least one of three categories of behavior: foraging, such as scouting for flowers or navigating to and from the hive; maturation, the process by which an adult honey bee graduates from being a nanny to working as a forager as it grows older; and aggression, or hive defense.
The researchers then used a systems approach, led by Illinois chemical and biomolecular engineering professor Nathan Price (now at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle), to create a computer model of a gene regulatory network that could predict the differences in gene expression seen in the experimental studies.
The model found a "mosaic" pattern of behavior-related gene expression in the brain. It also predicted that a few transcription factors ? genes that regulate other genes ? play a role in all three behavioral categories. Only four of these "global regulators" were identified, while sets of about 15-25 transcription factors were behavior-specific.
Researchers have long worried that the regulation of brain gene expression is too complex to fathom, because so many factors can act together to regulate behavior.
"But now we see that direct, linear relationships between transcription factors and downstream genes can predict a surprisingly large amount of gene expression," Price said. "This gives scientists hope that it will be possible to completely understand the regulation of brain gene expression in the future."

"Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriet Beecher Stowe was the best-selling novel of the 19th century, and almost immediately upon its publication in 1852, it made its way to stage, vaudeville, music and minstrel shows. In fact, it gave birth to an entire genre of minstrel shows called "Tom Shows."
And, appropriately enough, it was the subject of one of the earliest films, a 12-minute motion picture made in 1903 by mechanic-turned-movie director Edwin S. Porter, which introduced the first black character though played by a white actor in blackface ever depicted in American cinema.
University of Cincinnati researcher Sharon Dean, associate professor of English and women's studies, has studied the impact of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" in film and popular culture for decades and points out that while more than 100 films, plays and musicals have recreated and reinterpreted the novel, many more reference its characters, plot and themes in some way.
According to Dean, "The 1915 silent movie 'The Birth of a Nation' borrows characters and the slave-cabin setting from Stowe's novel. Bugs Bunny cartoons from the 1930s and '40s reference the novel. The musical 'The King and I' also contains a subplot from Stowe's book. And even the 2002 film 'Gangs of New York' contains a scene where characters are at a stage play of 'Uncle Tom's Cabin.'"

She added that in the early part of the 20th century and even well into the 1930s and '40s, Hollywood films were actively demeaning of and toward African Americans, largely because Hollywood tapped into the already popular formula of the Tom Shows. There was a brief respite from these characterizations, provided by the 1920s and '30s race films. Race films were movies produced by, directed by and starred in by African Americans for an African American audience.
In the 1950s, Hollywood began to react to the growing civil rights movement and to attract more diverse audiences. Thus, films took more care, generally, in depicting diversity and with characterizations of diverse groups. Stated Dean, "The 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' scene in 'The King and I' would exemplify this much more sympathetic treatment of African American characters, with a harsher judgment delivered regarding the practice of slavery."
In the 1960s and 1970s, films of and entertainment industry references to "Uncle Tom's Cabin" largely disappeared due to the civil rights movement. Interpretations of and references to the book's narrative did not return until a 1987 television movie depicting the book. The more modern versions and references to the work generally employ it as a vehicle to explore and depict racial and economic injustice.
"The story, its characters, stereotypes and themes continue to be the lens through which we define America's history of slavery and our interpretation of the struggle for equal rights. And while interpretations and reference to the book have certainly evolved, some elements have remained both consistent and intriguing," said Dean.
For instance, two girl characters in "Uncle Tom's Cabin" are Eva and Topsy. Eva, a white child, is intelligent and angelic, while Topsy, a black child, is the opposite. (The current focus of Dean's research is the history and representation of Topsy.)
"Yet," according to Dean, "from the earliest film versions, these characters were consistently played by twins. This brought in a subtext to these movies that didn't exist in the book. The films were bringing a new dimension, looking at our duality as human beings, the multifaceted sides one individual can have."

The films were bringing a new dimension, looking at our duality as human beings, the multifaceted sides one individual can have."

New Delhi/Mumbai, Sep 24: In a sign of improving bilateral ties, Pakistan Commerce and Trade Minister Makhdoom Amin Faheem will begin a five-day visit to India from Mumbai Monday.
He will be the first Pakistani minister to visit India?s financial hub since Pakistani terrorists attacked the city nearly three years ago, plunging bilateral ties to a new low.
Faheem will be accompanied by an 80-member delegation comprising the elite of Pakistan business.
The visit is aimed at promoting bilateral trade with a strong possibility of Pakistan announcing a step forward on the Most Favoured Status (MFN) for India. The two sides are also expected to focus on liberalizing the visa regime for businessmen.
Faheem will address an India-Pakistan business conclave Tuesday at the iconic Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai that bore the brunt of assaults by ten Pakistani terrorists.
Top CEOs from Indian and Pakistani companies are expected to highlight business opportunities and synergies between the two countries.
Faheem?s visit builds on the positive atmosphere generated by the talks between foreign ministers of India and Pakistan in June this year, during which the two sides unveiled a host of steps to boost cross-Kashmir trade and travel.
Faheem will hold talks with his Indian counterpart Anand Sharma in New Delhi Sep 28. He is also expected to call on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Ahead of the crucial talks, India is hopeful that Pakistan will grant MFN to it or at least move from the positive to negative list of goods that it does not want to import from India.
This will effectively amount to giving an MFN status to India. India had granted MFN to Pakistan way back in 1996. Pakistan has given access to 1,940 product lines on its positive list and has 12,000 on the negative list.
The two ministers are also expected to focus on streamlining procedures for business visas and address issues related to custom duties and inclusion of new products in the trade list.
India and Pakistan decided to resume their dialogue process in February after a hiatus of more than two years.
India-Pakistan trade was estimated to be $1.85 billion in 2009-10. Indian exports accounted for $1.78 billion. In April-December 2010, bilateral trade is estimated to have jumped gone up to over $3 billion with India?s exports at $1.7 billion.
A study by Delhi-based Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations estimates, given reciprocal concessions, bilateral trade between India and Pakistan could go up to $14.3 billion.

I cant say I was surprised, the tank has been uncovered since we first looked at it in February! I was just hoping it was nothing (wishful thinking!).
Aside from that, its ours if we want it. Im waiting on the Termite and Septic quote, and the appraisal to make sure its worth what we are paying for it. At that point, we either cancel or close, financing is a done deal.
On a side note, a few months ago I dreamt that we were moving into a new place, and the folks that lived there left the kids behind. They were roughly about the same age as the children we fell head over heals in love with (but ended up going to the grandparents against the counties advice). The mother said since we were already foster parents, she would sign over rights. Wow, my mind works overtime! So maybe just maybe, we will get placed after we move!
I did tell our Social Worker that we were waiting to hear. I guess as soon as we actually are ready to move in, Ill call her for an inspection and update. She said if we were placed prior to moving that we would just move them with us

The former NFL players who appeared at the event included Marvin Smith, Reggie Berry, C.R. Roberts, Amon Arnold, Frank Rice, Ron Brown and Steve Wright.? Smith pointed to the fact that the City of Industry site permits traditional tailgating.
?I just think tailgating is a great experience, and I can?t wait to take my son to a tailgate party since I can?t play anymore,? Smith said.
