How to make cheaper international calls - Mobile Cell Phone ...

Calling international numbers from a mobile phone can be an expensive business. When you call international numbers with a standard PAYG or contract phone, you must pay for two calls, one to your network and one from a foreign network, which is going to cost you a lot of money. Texts are not quite as expensive, but they are still charged at the maximum rate.

There are a few ways you can get around this, however. You could, for example, send an email instead, or take advantage of instant messaging services such as MSN Messenger. If all you are looking to do is convey some information, and they are on the web, then this is by far the cheapest and easiest option. However, if you would prefer to speak to the person, then there are still a few things that you can do to keep the cost down.

VoIP services such as Skype allow you to make voice calls over the internet for free, as long as both parties have a headset with a microphone, or an internet capable smart phone. A wi fi connection is a must, as mobile internet is not really cheap or good enough to make it worth your while. These services can also be used to call landline and mobile phones abroad using local telephone exchanges, and although this is a very cost effective route to international telecommunication, it is not always the most convenient option.

International calling cards are another option. In order to use these, you have to phone the operator, enter the unique number on the scratch strip, and then dial the phone number in question. This can work out quite cheaply, but it is not the most hassle free.

One of the most convenient ways to get cheap international calls is to swap your simcard for one that is designed for international calling. You may have to get your phone unlocked, but you only have to do this once, and it means that you do not have to mess around with internet connections or international calling cards.
