Karzai Tells Ahmadinejad: Afghans Want Departure Of Foreign Troops

In Astana, Iranian President Ahmadinejad told Afghan President Hamid Karzai that Iran can play important role in strengthening the national unity and development in Afghanistan, according to an Afghan news agency.

The two leaders were in Astana to attend the 10th anniversary conference of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Karzai called Ahmadinejad in his hotel in Astana and they discussed the prevailing situation in Afghanistan and regional issues, according to a report carried by Afghan news agency AvaPress.

Karzai told Ahmadinejad that the Afghan nation wants the departure of foreign troops from Afghanistan. Karzai said, "The people of Afghanistan are against the continuation of the presence of foreign troops, and for a single second, they will not want the presence of those occupiers."

Afghanistan wants to increase cooperation with its neighbors for real self-reliance, he added. According to the report, Ahmadinejad told Karzai that war by the U.S. and its allies in Afghanistan and Iraq has not ended terrorism and has instead spread terrorism.
