LILONGWE?Tension is mounting in the Malawian capital Lilongwe ahead of planned vigils over the economy by civil society Wednesday, August 17.
On Monday, soldiers in their full military gear drove around the streets of the capital where many shops were closed and boarded up. Last week, the military said they would help police to protect people and property if the demonstrations went ahead and got out of control.
After the July 20 demonstrations, civil society leaders presented a long list of grievances to Pres Mutharika and demanded that he provides answers by August 16.
Fearing a repeat of the July 20 demonstrations which left 19 people dead, Pres Mutharika has urged the civil society not to go ahead with the protests and called for dialogue.
But the president?s calls have come up against a wall as civil society leaders said Mutharika, known for making contradictory statements, wasn?t serious about solving the country?s problems.
The demonstrations were organised to protest against the high cost of living and concerns that the Mutharika administration was increasingly becoming autocratic.--maravipost
